Chilli Con Carnage

England Rugby legend James Haskell and open-flame icon DJ BBQ have cooked up The Unbelievable ALT. Tender Beefless Pieces in a properly fiery Chilli Con-Carnage in this first ever recipe for the Meat Free Meet Ups series. This recipe packs an absolute punch and serves 2 people … or one Haskell.

Chilli Con Carnage


1 x 180g The Unbelievable ALT. Tender Beefless Pieces
1 yellow onion, finely chopped
½ tbsp of olive oil
2 cloves of garlic, smashed and bashed
1 red chillies, sliced
½ handful of coriander stalks, sliced and diced
1 tsp of chilli powder
¾ tbsp of cumin
½ tsp of smoked paprika
1 cinnamon sticks
½ shot of bourbon
1x 400g cans of chopped tomatoes
½ heaped spoonful tomato puree
50g dark chocolate or ½ tbsp of cocoa powder
1x 400g can of kidney beans
Freshly ground black pepper
Sea salt
300g basmati rice
½ spoon sour cream
Coriander leaves, to taste

    Put a frying pan onto the hob and turn to medium heat (OR place your pot on the bbq near the middle of the slope of charcoal, if you’re cooking this like DJ BBQ).

    Drizzle some olive oil then add the onions and sautee them until they go soft. Chuck in the garlic, coriander stalks, and chillies. Cook for a couple minutes then add all your spices, then mix everything together.

    Turn up the heat (or move the pot to the hotter end of the bbq), empty the pack of The Unbelievable Tender Beefless Pieces and cook as per on pack instructions.

    Add the tins of chopped tomatoes. Add the dark chocolate and stir. Now, fill both the tomato cans with water and pour them into the pan (or cauldron) to thin out the mix.

    Add a bit of Sea Salt and freshly cracked pepper, stir thoroughly and cover with the lid.

    Turn the heat down (or move the pot to the far side of the bbq) so you can gently simmer.

    Give it a stir every now and then for the next hour. If your tasty concoction starts drying out, then add a bit more water.

    After an hour stir in your kidney beans and continue simmering for 20-minutes. Now's a good time to cook your rice.

    Once the Chilli Con Carnage is ready, season to taste and serve on top of a mini mountain of rice. Drop a spoon of sour cream on top and shred some of the coriander leaves on top (and …DJ BBQ’s top tip - play Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire and enjoy your fine creation!)
